Component Restoration

A worn component does not always mean you need a new one.

On many machine components, the working surface is the part that wears first, while the base component still retains its value. In such cases, surface restoration may allow the existing component to be returned to service.

Cromon assesses the possibility of restoration based on the condition of the component, material, geometry, degree of wear, and the requirements the surface must meet after processing.

Why restore?

Often, only the working surface is worn.

A shaft, piston rod, roller, or other machine component may still be structurally sound while its functional surface no longer meets the requirements of the assembly. That is when it is worth checking whether restoration is possible.

Restoration instead of automatic replacement

The value of a component is often far greater than its worn surface.

A machine component can contain far more value than the few tenths of a millimeter or millimeters of material that have worn away during operation. Its geometry, material, manufacturing process, and fit within the existing machine are already established.

If the base component is in suitable condition, restoring the working surface can preserve that existing component and return it to service.

That is why the first step is not deciding on chrome plating, but assessing the entire component and the problem that needs to be solved.

Not every worn component should be restored. Restoration makes sense only when a technical assessment confirms that it is appropriate.

What should you check before ordering a new component?

The base component still has value

The component is structurally important, specialized, expensive to reproduce, or difficult to source.

The problem is concentrated on the working surface

The primary reason for failure is wear, reduced dimensions, or damage to the functional surface.

The required result is known

A drawing, dimension, assembly sample, or other information is available to define the required function of the component.

The component can be inspected

Photos and basic information are often enough for an initial discussion, while the final assessment may require inspection of the actual component.

The final decision depends on the technical assessment of the specific component.

When to Stop

Not every component is suitable for restoration.

A reliable assessment also includes the possibility of concluding that restoration is not justified or technically appropriate.

Severely damaged base component

If the problem is not limited to the surface and the component itself has been compromised, surface restoration may not solve the underlying issue.

Material and design

The material, geometry, or design of the component may limit the application of certain processes.

Insufficient information about the requirement

Without understanding the required final dimension and function, it is difficult to determine the correct restoration method.

Replacement may be more practical

For simple, readily available, or severely damaged components, a new component may sometimes be the more practical choice.
